B.C. Summer Games-goers will fill ferries

NANAIMO – With thousands of B.C. Summer Games' participants set to descend on the city, B.C. Ferries is expecting heavy traffic.

With B.C. Summer Games’ participants set to descend on Nanaimo this week, B.C. Ferries is advising Harbour City customers to expect heavy traffic at the Games’ conclusion.

The Games run from Thursday (July 17) until Sunday and the 4:40, 5:20 and 7:30 p.m. sailings from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay on Sunday and the 5:45 p.m. Sunday sailing from Duke Point to Tsawwassen will see larger-than-usual traffic, according to a B.C. Ferries release.

B.C. Ferries also advises that people planning to depart Sunday take advantage of its reservation service. Sunday travellers without reservation are asked to consider taking ferries before 3 p.m. or after 7:30 p.m. and an extra ferry will depart from Departure Bay at 9:05 p.m. Sunday, affording another sailing option.

Foot passengers are recommended to consider another sailing, as the aforementioned are expected to reach capacity.

Approximately 2,000 of the Games’ 3,200 participants are expected to travel by ferry.

Motorists are being advised that there will of traffic restrictions along Third Street during the opening ceremonies Thursday evening and the closing ceremonies Sunday afternoon.
