With new hybrid ferries destined for the Nanaimo-Gabriola ferry run in 2022, B.C. Ferries will conduct a test run in early February.
In a press release, B.C. Ferries said its newest Island-class vessel, the Island Aurora, will transport passengers between terminals at Descanso Bay and downtown Nanaimo from Feb. 7-8. On Feb. 6, the vessel will sail on the route performing “operational exercises,” the release noted.
“On Feb. 7 and 8, customers travelling for essential reasons may sail aboard the Island Aurora and regular fares will apply. More details regarding the trial and timing will be shared next week,” B.C. Ferries said in the release.
The test run will provide information related to “operational efficiencies, loading times and sailing intervals,” said B.C. Ferries. The information will be used to establish sailing times, in conjunction with input from residents during engagement this spring, it said.
The two new Island Class ferries will replace the MV Quinsam next year.
