B.C. Ferries is subtracting a vessel from the Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route and adding it to the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route to try to alleviate Horseshoe Bay traffic congestion this summer.
The move, in effect from June 25 to Sept. 4, will mean that three vessels will service the route to and from Duke Point, as the south Nanaimo terminal is more spacious and better-equipped to “safely and efficiently handle traffic,” said B.C. Ferries in a press release. The Horseshoe Bay ferry lineup has had a tendency to “unsafely back onto Highway 99” in West Vancouver.
As an incentive for travellers to sail from different terminals, B.C. Ferries will offer additional saver fares to Duke Point-Tsawwassen customers beginning July 5, starting at $39 for standard vehicles, the press release noted. Reservation space will also be added to the route, as well as a 33-per cent discount for commercial vehicles at certain times and promotions to attract overheight vehicles.
The changes make Tsawwassen-Duke Point “the better way to travel to Nanaimo,” the press release stated.
