Authorized overdose prevention site opens in Nanaimo

Nanaimo's first authorized overdose prevention site is open. Vancouver Island Health Authority and the Canadian Mental Health Association Mid-Island Branch officially opened the prevention site, located at 437 Wesley St., on Tuesday.Valerie Wilson, communications officer with Island Health, said her organization is glad to finally have the site up and running."We are pleased to be doing this and helping the folks that need service," she said. Wilson said the Wesley Street site is operated by CMHA Mid-Island branch and not fully operational at the moment, but will be in the coming weeks."Because the site has just opened it will only be operational for eight hours a day," she said. "When it is fully operational it will be 13 hours a day. [Hours] will increase in the days and weeks ahead as we continue to recruit and train staff."The site is currently staffed by workers from Island Health and CMHA Mid-Island branch, according to Wilson.Wilson said she doesn't have any information about injections, overdoses or any deaths at the site just yet. She said utilization will be tracked and monitored by Canadian Mental Health and information will be made available soon. "We anticipate that we will be able to share information related to the first week of use probably close to the end of next week," Wilson said.
