Atleo continues as chancellor at Vancouver Island University

NANAIMO – Atleo resigned Friday as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

While Shawn Atleo stepped down as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, he will complete his term as chancellor at Vancouver Island University.

Atleo assumed the role of chancellor in 2008 and his second and final three-year term is set to end Aug. 31. A chancellor can only hold the position for two terms.

Ralph Nilson, university president and vice-chancellor, was complimentary and grateful to Atleo for his service as national chief, stating that he had always strongly advocated for education for people of aboriginal descent.

It is a passion Atleo has shared with students and faculty in his role as university chancellor, according to Nilson.

“We look forward to his continued leadership as he completes his term as VIU’s chancellor. His vision, leadership and integrity will continue to be a beacon for education for aboriginal children and youth across Canada,” Nilson said.

Atleo announced his resignation as national chief Friday.
