Nanaimo RCMP and fire inspectors from the City of Nanaimo have launched an arson investigation after a fire at a business on Bowen Road early Thursday morning.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to a fire at Motion Specialties in the 2500 block of Bowen Road at 12:20 a.m. June 18, according to a press release, and the blaze was contained to an outside loading dock, with minimal damage to the building’s interior.

However, the fire was determined to be caused by “paper being shoved inside a number of wooden pallets then set on fire,” said the press release. In addition, investigators noted a chain link fence around the loading dock had been cut and a backpack was also found on scene, with paper and other debris.

Investigators are canvassing local businesses for closed-circuit TV footage and if anyone has information about the incident, they are asked to call Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
