A bridge in downtown Nanaimo is undergoing modifications to make it earthquake safe.

Workers from Island West Coast Developments removed cosmetic panels under the Bastion Street bridge Wednesday morning. Removing the panels, which weigh nearly 600 kilograms each, lightens the load on the bridge and reduces the potential risk of falling debris in the event of a severe earthquake.
