Cyclists in Nanaimo are leading the charge in active, sustainable transportation thanks in part to the new Evolve E-Bike Share program from BCAA.
Introduced in May, the Evolve E-Bike Share program has quickly become a preferred way to get around for locals and visitors alike.
Evolve's user-friendly approach has also been a key factor in its success. Riders simply use the Evo mobile app to sign up, find and unlock an e-bike, and start riding within minutes. With affordable rates and the flexibility to pay by the minute, hour or through a monthly subscription, Evolve is proving to be a convenient choice for short commutes, errands or simply exploring.
The numbers speak for themselves. In Nanaimo alone, over 1,700 riders have adopted the program, completing nearly 3,500 trips and covering more than 17,000 kilometres within just the first four months. This shift to e-bikes instead of cars translates to a reduction of 4,500 kg of greenhouse gases (GHG)
The service currently operates with 17 parking zones in Nanaimo including a recent expansion to Vancouver Island University. Evolve also hopes to further expand to places like the Nanaimo ferry terminals, to offer people a convenient choice for the first or last mile of their journey.
Leanne Buhler, Head of Evolve E-Bike and E-Scooter Share at BCAA, celebrated the program’s success in Nanaimo and expressed her hopes to bring both e-bike and e-scooter services to more communities across the Island.
“We are thrilled by the positive response to Evolve E-Bike Share in Nanaimo, especially with our recent expansion to Vancouver Island University. This pilot gives valuable insights into how shared micromobility can benefit the community. As we look to expand further, including potential connections to the ferry terminals, we’re excited to continue enhancing sustainable and active ways to get around for locals and visitors. We’re also excited to explore bringing shared e-bike and e-scooter services to more communities across the Island, making these options accessible to even more people.”
Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog, highlighted the program’s role in advancing the city's transportation and sustainability objectives.
“The partnership with Evolve E-Bike Share aligns perfectly with Nanaimo’s commitment to promoting active transportation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The early success of this program demonstrates the community’s eagerness to embrace sustainable mobility options. We are excited to see how this initiative will continue to advance our city’s transportation goals and expand mobility offerings for our residents.”
As Nanaimo explores new ways to enhance transportation options, Evolve E-Bike Share has seamlessly integrated into many residents’ daily commutes. By supporting active transportation and reducing barriers to sustainable travel, the program aims to foster a more connected and environmentally friendly future for more communities on Vancouver Island.
