From the edge of Maffeo Sutton Park, the low forested island of Saysutshun (Newcastle Island Provincial Park) is a familiar part of Nanaimo's harbour view. But what lies beyond the horizon is a first-class provincial park hidden in plain sight.

Begin your adventure by booking a ferry in advance. Using the online booking tool to secure your preferred sailing time is the best way to plan your day to ensure your adventure is seamless.

Campsites are available on a first-come first-served basis, but reservations are highly recommended.

Day 1: Arrive and Explore

Begin your adventure by boarding the small harbour ferry for a scenic 10-minute journey to Saysutshun. It’s a beautiful approach to the island and an excellent vantage point to see the sprawl of Nanaimo Harbour. Take your time to pop into the new Welcome Centre gazebo before enjoying the beaches, parkland, wildlife and 22 kilometres of well-tended trails.

Immerse yourself in the island's rich heritage with a guided walking tour led by knowledgeable Snuneymuxw guides. Delve into ancient stories and traditions as you hike through lush forests and coastal trails. If a self-guided tour is more your thing, the On This Spot app brings the island's history to life, allowing you to compare historic photos with present-day views.

Settle into your camping spot at one of the 18 walk-in campsites located in a quiet, forested area just a 5-minute walk from the docks. Choose a site next to the ocean for a truly serene experience. Prepare a cozy campfire and enjoy a meal under the stars before retiring for the night.

Day 2: Adventure and Relax

Awaken to the sounds of nature and fuel up with a campsite breakfast. Gear up for a day of outdoor adventure: your choice is kayaking through crystal-clear waters, cycling, or hiking easy coastal trails. Design your own outdoor adventure to include birdwatching, a forest stroll, beach combing, or a meander through all the significant cultural and historical sites on the island.

Lounge on sun-kissed beaches by the ocean's edge. Pack a picnic lunch or grab some takeout from the Pavilion and dine al fresco, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. With no bears or cougars on the island, there’s not much wildlife to be concerned about, but please don’t feed birds or other critters.

As the sun sets, take a stroll along the shoreline, soaking in the twilight. Return to Trollers on Land for an unforgettable dinner, dining on fresh seafood as you watch the sun dip low. Reconnect with Nature's Rhythm
