If you’ve ever found yourself craving a proper sit-down meal late at night in Nanaimo, you’re not alone – and a new restaurant is stepping in to fill that gap.
Flamez Chicken, which opened April 28 in the heart of downtown, is bringing bold flavours and a much-needed late-night option to the city’s dining scene. Whether you’re after a hearty lunch, casual dinner or something satisfying after hours, it’s got you covered.
Founded locally by Ricky Saini, Pam Sharma and Maddy Asghar, Flamez is one of the few downtown spots serving up flame-grilled and fried chicken made entirely from scratch – with a focus on quality, flavour and community.
“It just felt like something was missing downtown,” Saini says. “We wanted a place where you could sit down after hours and enjoy something fresh – not just grab a snack and go.”
That vision has taken off. Since opening day, Flamez Chicken has drawn steady crowds, including Mayor Leonard Krog, with diners ranging from late-shift workers and university students to families and curious newcomers.
More than just another fast-food spot, Flamez is the result of over 25 years in the food industry – and a dream born in a Nanaimo kitchen. The idea came from constantly tweaking takeout meals at home, adding homemade gravies and sauces for more flavour. So, they decided to do it themselves.
The result? Chicken marinated for 24 hours, hand-battered and made fresh to order. A lineup of in-house sauces rounds it out: their Butter Gravy, rich and creamy, is the soul of their signature dishes. The Signature Flamez Hot Sauce brings bold heat with hand-picked peppers and spices, while the Mango Lime Sauce offers a zesty tropical twist – all made from scratch, all made with care.
“There are easier ways to do this,” Saini says. “But we’re not in it for shortcuts. People taste the difference.”
Beyond the menu, what sets Flamez apart is its heart. Built from the ground up – no investors, no franchise backing – the team is committed to giving back.
That spirit will shine on June 14, during the grand opening celebration, with $1 drumsticks and all proceeds donated to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Flamez will match every dollar raised.
Looking ahead, they plan to introduce family deals, senior and kids' promotions, and sponsor local sports teams.
For anyone craving late-night comfort food done right, Flamez Chicken at 299 Wallace St. might just be your new favourite spot.
