The Vancouver Island University Mariners women's soccer team established winning ways right at the start of the season.
VIU swept the Langara Falcons in Pacific Western Athletic Association action on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7-8. The M's won 5-1 in their home opener at Merle Logan Field, then followed up with a 2-0 shutout the next day at Q'unq'inuqwstuxw Stadium.
In the first game Brianna Narduzzi led the way with a pair of goals, while Maggie Thurbide and Jade Dillabough also tallied and Langara had an own-goal. In the rematch, Courtney Ingram and Tori Hauptman scored five minutes apart late in the first half.
In men's action on the weekend, VIU split its games against Langara, winning 2-1 in the home opener but then falling 5-0 in the rematch. Louis Goldbrunner and Charlie Smith were the home team's scorers on the weekend.
GAME ON … The Mariners women and men are on the road this coming weekend, playing the Douglas Royals on Saturday, Sept. 14, and then the Capilano Blues on Sunday, Sept. 15. Next home action for VIU is Sept. 28-29.
