The regular season is still a month away, but Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team is anxious to start draining baskets.
The VIU Mariners play two exhibition games this coming weekend, hosting the Las Vegas Unknown on Friday, Sept. 20, and then taking on a VIU alumni team on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The matchup against the Mariners alumni is a fundraiser for the Island Kids Cancer Association, and the M’s will be asking for people to give to the cause, and will hold a 50/50 and encourage online donations as well.
Matt Kuzminski, VIU coach, said in an e-mail that the cause is important to the program as Mariners alumni have had family members battle cancer and Island Kids Cancer has provided “huge support.”
GAME ON … The matchup Friday, Sept. 20, against Las Vegas tips off at 7 p.m. and the fundraiser alumni game Saturday, Sept. 21, starts at 5 p.m. The Pacific Western Athletic Association season starts Oct. 18-19.
