Nanaimo’s semi-pro soccer club has decided to embrace the city’s soccer tradition and change its name.

After two seasons in League 1 B.C., Harbourside FC is changing its name to Nanaimo United to match with the name of its parent club.

“Our first two seasons in League 1 B.C. have been exciting and successful, and this change will allow us to continue to grow by building upon the rich tradition of Nanaimo United FC as a strong regional club with a history dating back to 1903, as well as continuing to develop clear opportunities within the provincial and national soccer system,” noted the team in a press release.

The club added that aligning the name of the top men’s and women’s sides with the rest of the club will build “more player opportunities and operational synergies” and demonstrate a “clear link” for players, coaches and officials to develop.

The teams will begin their third seasons this April. For more information, visit www.harboursidefc.ca.
