The early training received by Olympic athletes Ethan Katzberg and Olivia Lundman from the Nanaimo Track and Field Club has been well documented. But let’s not forget the role that our local school system also played. It’s likely that some of their first exposure to track and field came at the elementary level. Granted, hammer throw and race walking were not taught, but basic skills were introduced and fostered. Some proof of that is provided by a Thorpe Report column dated June 25, 2015, which lists Lundman as finishing third in a peewee girls’ 1,500-metre race at the Nanaimo District Elementary Schools Track and Field Championships.
