New jumps, bumps and berms have paved the path to more fun, fast and competitive BMX racing in Nanaimo.
The renewed Marie Davidson BMX Park on Labieux Road opened for casual day use Friday, Dec. 20. The 4,000-square metres of new track surface has replaced the old 2,800-square-metre track, and along with Steve Smith Bike Park’s pump track and the mountain bike skills park, further establishes Nanaimo and Beban Park as an exciting cycling destination, according to a City of Nanaimo press release.
A recycled concrete and asphalt foundation, sealed with a dust suppressant and soil stabilizer makes Nanaimo's track the only one on the Island and one of just a few in Canada usable year-round.
Other improvements include a five-metre start hill with an official’s platform at the top, a new hydraulic start gate and compressor – to be installed in the spring – plus a secondary start hill has been added for beginners. There are now straights for amateurs and professionals and electrical services were installed for future track lighting. The track was shaped and constructed by Olympic BMX track builder Tom Ritz Design.
Nearly $1.5 million of the $1.9 million budget for the track renewal came from federal funding administered by the Union of B.C. Municipalities. Another $330,000 came from provincial funding and the Nanaimo BMX Association contributed $50,000.
The track is open now for casual and club use and competitions will be booked in the spring when the start gate is installed. A formal opening celebration is planned in the new year and Nanaimo will host the Harbour City Nationals, part of BMX Canada's national series, in July.
"These new tracks are a welcome addition for the people of Nanaimo, helping both casual and competitive bikers explore their hobby in their community,” said Ravi Kahlon, B.C. minister of housing and municipal affairs, in a press release. “It’s great to see all orders of government coming together to make public places safer to use for everyone. Our government will continue to support projects like this that lead to strong and healthy B.C. communities."
"It's time to tune that bike, practise those tailtaps and learn to ride the rhythm section,” said Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog in the release. “Nanaimo is quickly becoming one of the best places in Canada for cycling adventure and competition, and the renewed Marie Davidson BMX Track will encourage athleticism, personal achievement and even family time."
