Nanaimo-area athletes helped the Vancouver Island zone team reach the very top of the podium at the B.C. Summer Games.
More than 50 youths from Nanaimo, Lantzville and Nanoose Bay participated in the multi-sport event held in Maple Ridge from July 17-21.
The Vancouver Island-Central Coast team finished atop the medal standings with 154 medals, including 42 gold, 62 silver and 50 bronze.
One of the local standouts was paddler Samantha Manlow, who won five medals, including gold in both the K-1 500-metre and K-1 2,000m kayak races.
Also on the water, rower Cameron Catton-Cox won gold in the 1,000m.
In track and field competition, Tessa Bell won gold in triple jump, Danaea Brand won gold in the 4x100m relay, Carter Cunning won gold in the 4x400m relay, and Chase Kushniryk won gold in the 4x100m special Olympics sprint relay.
Also in special Olympics competition, Lornita Phillips won gold in the 50m freestyle swimming final.
