A Nanaimo skier is bringing back a medal from the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Ron Greenhorn won bronze in the intermediate giant slalom last week in Turin, Italy. He finished just outside the medals in the slalom with a fourth-place finish, and was seventh in the super G.

Greenhorn earned the chance to represent Canada by advancing through the 2023 Special Olympics B.C. Winter Games in Kamloops and then the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary.

Special Olympics B.C. president Dan Howe said in a press release that B.C.'s Team Canada members achieved greatness both during and outside competition at the world winter games.

“These passionate athletes with intellectual disabilities delivered many personal bests and moments of inspiration, and opened hearts and minds to their abilities…" he said. "We’re so grateful for the vital network of dedicated volunteers, families, sponsors, and supporters behind the national team and the year-round Special Olympics programs across our province."

The games, held March 8-15, brought together 1,500 athletes from 100 countries. Team Canada earned 116 medals at the event, with B.C. athletes winning 29.
