An organization dedicated to lifelong learning, servicing Nanaimo and area, has reached the stage of its rebuild where it can start accepting registration for the fall semester.
Mid Island Elder College registered as a non-profit in order to continue course offerings for students aged 50 and up after Vancouver Island University ended its support for the program in 2023.
According to a press release, Mid Island Elder College will be offering 60 courses for the fall semester from September to November, with topics ranging from astronomy to mysticism.
At an annual general meeting last month, a board was elected, and Ross Peterson, an instructor instrumental in the society continuing, was recognized for his efforts. Peterson was honoured with the first life-time membership in the new Elder College society, the press release stated, as an acknowledgement for the leadership in the establishment as a non-profit society.
"Peterson, who is himself a volunteer instructor, took on the role of the chair of the interim board and infused it with vision and zeal," said the press release.
In-person and online courses, as well as online registration are available, the press release noted. In-person classes will be held at Nanaimo's Harbourfront Library, and also at locations in Lantzville, Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Registration begins Monday, July 15.
Elder College has been existence for 30 years.
