New intersection takes over as Nanaimo's worst

The intersection of the old Island Highway, Mostar Road and Rutherford Road was the worst in Nanaimo for crashes in 2023, according to ICBC statistics.

Three Nanaimo intersections are in the top five worst on the Island for crashes.

ICBC released crash data from 2023 this month, and the stats show that in Nanaimo, the intersection with the most crashes last year was the old Island Highway at Rutherford Road and Mostar Road, with 73 collisions. It marked a change, as in both 2021 and 2022, the Nanaimo intersection with the most crashes was the old Island Highway at Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road.

Second on the list this year was the Nanaimo Parkway at the Jingle Pot Road south intersection, which saw crashes double from 34 in 2022 to 68 in 2023.

All three of those locations were in the top five on Vancouver Island's list of crash-prone intersections.

8. Old Island Highway, Bowen Road and Norwell Drive - 47 (-11)
9. Nanaimo Parkway at Northfield Road - 42 (+3)
10. Trans-Canada Highway, Maki Road and Tenth Street - 35 (+1)

1. Saanich: Douglas Street, Mackenzie Avenue and Patricia Bay Highway - 86 crashes (+26)
2. Nanaimo: Old Island Highway, Mostar Road and Rutherford Road - 73 (+17)
3. Nanaimo: Nanaimo Parkway at Jingle Pot Road (south) - 68 (+34)
4. Nanaimo: Old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road - 66 (-5)
5. Saanich: Blanshard Street at Saanich Road - 63 (+20)
(tie) Langford: Trans-Canada Highway, Millstream Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway - 63 (+13)
7. Victoria: Douglas Street, Gorge Road, Government Road and Hillside Avenue - 60 (+7)
8. Duncan: Trans-Canada Highway at Beverly Street - 56 (+6)

Ladysmith’s top five worst intersections (+/- from previous year):

Trans-Canada Highway, First Avenue and Ludlow Road - 16 crashes (+8)
Trans-Canada Highway at Oyster Sto-lo Road - 11 (+4)
Trans-Canada Highway, Davis Road and Chemainus Road - 10 (-7)
Cedar Road, Adshead Road and Code Road - 5 (+2)
Trans-Canada Highway, Roberts Street and Transfer Beach Boulevard - 5 (-4)

Lantzville’s worst intersection in 2023 was the Island Highway at Ware Road, which had 15 crashes, up three from the year before, followed by the Island Highway at Superior Road with 13 crashes and Island Highway at Lantzville Road with eight.

In Nanoose Bay, the most crash-prone intersection in 2022 was the Island Highway at Northwest Bay Road, with 16 crashes, followed by the Island Highway at Northwest Bay Logging Road with 15 crashes.

On Gabriola Island, North Road at Taylor Bay Road with three crashes was the worst.
