Nanaimo RCMP hope the public can help identify two men who police consider persons of interest in the theft of a sailboat.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking for the public’s help in identifying two men considered persons of interest in the theft of a sailboat.

According to an RCMP press release, at about 1:30 a.m. July 10, two men unlawfully entered a dock at Townsite Marina on Townsite Road. Later that same day, a 45-foot sailboat, Soggy Dollar, moored along H dock, was reported stolen.

Investigators were able to retrieve surveillance footage of two individuals who were seen climbing around the gate to the entrance where the sailboat was moored.

The sailboat was found later the same day adrift in Departure Bay and a zodiac was reported to have been seen leaving the location of the sailboat, the release noted. The sailboat and the zodiac have since been recovered by the RCMP marine unit and turned over to Nanaimo RCMP for safekeeping. The owner has been advised.

The first person of interest is described as 40-45 years old, of medium build and height, who was wearing a black puffy jacket, blue shirt, jeans and black baseball cap and was smoking a cigarette. The second person is 35-40 years of age, with a thin build and medium height who was wearing a red t-shirt with a white logo on the front, brown shorts and was carrying a bike tire.

Anyone with information about these individuals or knowledge about the crime is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2024-21859.
