Nanaimo motorists warned to avoid problem areas in the snow

Nanaimo RCMP report multiple rear-enders and vehicles in ditches

Police are warning drivers to steer clear of several roads around the city following the first significant snowfall of the winter on Monday, Feb. 3.

Nanaimo RCMP reported multiple crashes and advised in a press release that road conditions have been causing delays around Rutherford Road, Turner Road, and the intersection of Fitzwilliam, Third and Pine streets. East Wellington Road near Maxey Road is also proving treacherous.

“Multiple fender benders and vehicles in ditches have been reported,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the release. “Often these are the result of motorists travelling too fast for road conditions and not maintaining sufficient space between the vehicle ahead of them. Leave yourself time to get to your destination and if you are not comfortable driving in the snow, consider taking an alternative means of transportation."

O’Brien said motorists should expect winter driving conditions to continue for the foreseeable future.

Environment Canada is forecasting that snow will continue through Tuesday, Feb. 4.
