Influential women in Nanaimo nominated ahead of inaugural awards night

The Women of Influence Nanaimo awards gala will be held at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre on Feb. 7. Nominees were recently announced.

Nearly 100 people have been officially named as nominees for a first-ever awards gala that aims to celebrate people making a difference in and around Nanaimo.

According to a release, the Women of Influence Nanaimo awards is more than just a ceremony; it’s an inclusive platform designed to support and celebrate the power of influence among women, non-binary, two-spirit and gender-diverse people in the community. The awards aim to salute the unique achievements of people representing various spheres, careers and initiatives that contribute to the advancement of women and the overall fabric of community.

There are 11 award categories with 98 nominees in total: the Breathe Fire award, which honours someone who has overcome adversity and turned their “pain into pearls;” the Arts and Culture award for artistic and culture expression and contributions; the Business Impact award, which celebrates the achievements of a person who displays ambition and integrity in the business industry; the Youth Resiliency award for a 16-25-year-old who strives for change and shows resiliency in the face of adversity; the Creative Innovator award, which recognizes a “difference-maker, pioneer and go-getter” leader; the Matriarch award for those 50 years and older who have made a significant contributions throughout their career or volunteerism; the STEM award, which celebrates the achievements of someone who has significantly contributed to the science, technology, engineering or mathematics sector; the Fan the Flame category for an individual or organization that takes on the struggles of vulnerable communities; the Trades award, which honours a leader in their chosen that shows dedication and grit to advancing diversity and equity in the trades; the Health and Wellness award recognizing someone who contributes to the mental, emotional or physical health of the community either through the business sector, passion projects or volunteerism; and the Community and Social Responsibility award, which celebrates someone who utilizes their position, voice, expertise and influence to break down barriers and create positive change.

Announcement of the winners will occur live at the WIN awards gala at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre on Feb. 7, starting at 7 p.m.

The releases noted that proceeds from the event will go toward sustaining the non-profit program Footprints: Infertility and pregnancy loss support society.
