Mature students in Nanaimo and area can sign up for courses for the regional Elder College's fall intake.

Mid Island Elder College is accepting registration for its first fall session since Vancouver Island University halted its support of the program.

Among notable offerings for the fall include Ancient Love Poetry and Understanding Cannabis, noted a press release from Mid Island Elder College.

Courses will be held at the Nanaimo Museum, Harbourfront Library, Nanaimo North Library, and St. Philip by-the-Sea Anglican Church. Classes will also be held at Parksville Community Centre, Nanoose Place and Berwick Qualicum Beach.

Mid Island Elder College also announced support has been procured from Coastal Community Credit Union, the Nanaimo Foundation, the Rotary Club of Nanaimo and the Parksville Rotary Club.

In the press release, executives said they were proud of the work put in to offer a "full slate of courses" for the upcoming sessions.

"In only seven months, since we have become an independent entity, we've presented spring courses, a speakers' series and have 60 courses ready to go this fall," said Robin Fisher, Elder College board chairperson. "Since January, we've received – literally – more than 1,000 expressions of support for Elder College and its goals."
