Nanaimo citizens have rejected the city's plan for public works yard upgrades.

In a press release Friday, Nov. 29, the City of Nanaimo confirmed the results of this fall's alternative-approval process, and more than 10 per cent of the electorate voted against $90 million in long-term borrowing for upgrades to the works yard on Labieux Road.

The city received 8,655 valid elector response forms registering opposition, exceeding the 7,974 forms needed to block the borrowing bylaw.

Two previous alternative-approval processes related to Phase 1 public works yard upgrades failed due to administrative errors. The third AAP, to secure borrowing for the city to construct a new fleet maintenance building and administration building in a single phase, was held during September and October.

City council will discuss options on next steps at a meeting Monday, Dec. 2.
