Bus riders and other residents are being asked about what they'd like to see if a new transit exchange at Country Club Centre is rebuilt or relocated.
The City of Nanaimo's Country Club urban centre mobility upgrades project is focusing on possible sites for a new bus loop, determining accompanying features and increasing the area's safety and accessibility. It is also intended to make the area more "interconnected" for pedestrians, bikers and transit customers.
The exchange is currently located behind the mall on Norwell Drive.
An engagement booth will be set up on Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the mall entrance near Jysk and Fitness World, with city staff there to field questions and take feedback. An online survey will be available till Aug. 30 seeking information about community mobility and connectivity, and paper forms are available at city hall or Wellington library branch located inside the mall.
The current round of consultation will be followed by another in the fall that will firm up bus exchange features. Construction is planned to begin in 2026-27, the press release noted.
"Provincial legislation around transit-oriented areas provide for more intense development in the Country Club urban centre," said Mayor Leonard Krog in the press release. "We want to make sure it is well-served by active transportation and look forward to hearing from the community."
