Citizens didn't need to go through a fire to get a chance to meet Nanaimo firefighters.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue held an open house at Station 1 on Wednesday, Oct. 23. An extension of Fire Prevention Week, which took place Oct. 6-12, the event provided those who stopped by the chance to learn about not only fire prevention, but also firefighting equipment and other aspects of the job.
"We've opened their doors to the community, and we have tables set up for emergency preparedness, smoke detectors, bystander CPR, fire prevention awareness, our fire safety house tours, our Local 905 (union) has generously brought the fire safety house out for it and firefighters are showing the parents and the kids the fire trucks and what the fire service is here for," said fire chief Tim Doyle.
He estimated a few hundred people stopped by the Fitzwilliam Street fire hall for the event.
While the department has just hired new firefighters, Doyle said people learn about employment qualifications at www.nanaimo.ca/city-services/emergency-services/fire-rescue/recruitment.
