Police are looking for a suspect who snatched money from a teller at a bank in north Nanaimo.
The incident, according to Nanaimo RCMP, happened at about 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, at the BMO in Dickinson Crossing shopping centre along the old Island Highway.
Bank employees told officers a customer was in the process of receiving a sum of money when an unknown person who had been standing in line snatched the money, then left the bank. The victim and bank employee were not injured, no threats were made and no weapons were produced. Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, said the male suspect and a woman who was apparently with him had been waiting in the teller lineup. The two fled out of the bank, ran to a dark-colour pickup truck and drove away.
Police were on the scene within minutes and set up containment around the area, but were unable to locate the suspect, a Nanaimo RCMP press release noted.
The male suspect was described as about 6-foot-3, with dark clothing, sunglasses and a black medical mask. The only description provided of the alleged accomplice was that she was wearing grey sweatpants and white runners.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP detachment non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and reference file No. 2024-250.
