A burglar entered an unlocked home and took car keys and other items, and then stole a getaway vehicle, too.
A BMW sport utility vehicle, new golf clubs and a computer were stolen from a rural residence in Cedar this past weekend. According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, a man and his son arrived at their home at Farrar Road in Cedar around 1 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, and when they awoke later that day, they noticed numerous items missing.
The BMW X5, new Tour Edge Exotics graphite golf clubs, backpack with a computer, keys, wallet, purse, cash and credit cards were among the items taken, RCMP said. A credit card was used to buy gas at a station near the residence at approximately 2 a.m. and an airtag stopped tracking at Parksville.
The cards have since been cancelled and the family will be more vigilant, said reserve Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the press release.
"They admitted that they had become somewhat complacent over the years as nothing had ever been stolen from their property, let alone having items taken from their home," he said. "The next day they made sure that all of their doors and windows were locked before they retired for the evening."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP's non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, citing file No. 2024-30288.
