A Nanaimo singer-songwriter has been making music while at the same time exploring the effects of the sounds around us.
Art-folk musician Laura Kelsey’s new single Pieces will be released Tuesday, Sept. 17, one week ahead of the Sept. 24 premiere of her Telus Optik TV docuseries Found in Sound.
The lyrics of Pieces represent a romantic relationship, said Kelsey in a press release, but can pertain to any situation where one person wants to move forward while another person is holding them back.
“The song is a like a goodbye letter…” she said. “You can only do so much to help another person – in the end, we are all responsible for our own actions. The lyrics to Pieces express how we could have stayed together, but the other person just couldn’t move forward: Good luck, but I’ve got to get on with life.”
The single was recorded at Canary Studios in Lantzville with producer and musician Paul Cimolini. Kelsey is in the process of filming an accompanying music video.
Pieces will be available on all music streaming platforms.
As for Kelsey’s docuseries, it explores the physics of sound and the healing properties of sound, vibration and frequency, with interviews with local sound therapists, musicians, dancers and others. She received a grant from Telus Storyhive to produce the six-part series, and successfully renewed the grant to film a second season.
“Filming the docuseries has not only been interesting, but also inspiring – I’ve met so many caring people in our community who just want to help or create with others,” Kelsey said.
