The Nanaimo International Jazz Festival is making the city a little more musical this weekend.

The festival began Thursday, Sept. 12 and a parade took place Saturday, Sept. 14, with the procession going through Maffeo Sutton Park. The main event is Saturday, Sept. 14, when the Canadian All Stars Sextet featuring Christine Jensen and Phil Dwyer plays the Port Theatre.

François Savard, Nanaimo International Jazz Festival president, said it is hard to define the genre.

"It's so difficult to [find] the right words for jazz music," Savard said. "It's a discussion between instruments, a conversation between instruments … Somebody talks and somebody answers, so there's no real definition of jazz from my point of view."

Sometimes jazz is like classical music, other times it's like blues or rock and there is "no definite line," he said.
