The Nanaimo International Film Screening Society will show two very different films on Dec. 1.
The first is a thriller called Evil Does Not Exist, which explores human’s relationship to nature and balancing progress. It is a multi-award-winning film by Japanese director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi.
“Set in a small, isolated, rural community in Japan, the residents of the community are approached by a group wishing to develop a luxury glamping ground in the area. Politely the residents raise objections about the harm to their village, the stream providing water, and the surrounding natural habitat such a development would cause,” noted a news release from the film society. “The developer’s response: ‘A little pollution won’t affect the water’ and the conflict starts.”
Evil Does Not Exist will be shown at 1 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 1 in the Shaw Auditorium at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
The second show is a Canadian Christmas film from 2017 that explores Charles Dickens writing one of the most well-known Christmas stories, A Christmas Carol. The Man Who Invented Christmas is a period piece that the film society said makes for great family fun.
It will be shown Dec. 1 at 4 p.m.
Tickets for both shows can be purchased in advance at http://nifss.ca.
