A diverse soul and blues show is coming to Nanaimo later this month.
Emily Fennell, whose stage name is Miss Emily, will be performing July 25 at Simonholt restaurant, bringing a full-band show with a mixture of duo and solo performances.
"It's geared towards anybody who loves old-school music and reminiscent motown sounds, blues music all the way to folk and pop as well," she said. "My sound really incorporates a lot of different genres and that goes back to playing my different genres growing up."
Based out of Ontario, in 2020 Miss Emily received three Maple Blues Awards including female vocalist, new artist and sapphire blues video of the year, and in 2022 was nominated for a Juno.
"Blues to me is like a big umbrella and then there is all these sub-genres that kind of happen under that big umbrella called blues. I don't generally play traditional-style blues, although it does influence me."
Alongside her at her Nanaimo performance will be Graham Shonwise on bass, Duncan Symonds on guitar, Ben Vandergaast on keyboard and her husband, Van Romaine, on drums.
Fennell said the audience can expect original songs spaced apart by the occasional cover of well-known tunes by legends such as Ray Charles or the Beatles.
"It's an opportunity to really make a special connection with an audience, so I think people that really love that intimate and interactive vibe that you don't really get at a festival might uniquely like the experience."
The July 25 show at Simonholt starts at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available through www.eventbrite.ca. For more information, call the restaurant at 250-933-3338.
