Seniors receive emergency tips

A world-renowned expert on aging and seniors’ issues will talk about emergency preparedness Saturday (Feb. 5).

Gloria Gutman, founding director of the Gerontology Research Centre at Simon Fraser University, is the second guest in the Saturday Speaker Series – Taking Control of your Health and Wellness – organized by Vancouver Island University’s ElderCollege.

Gutman is a member of the World Health Organization’s Expert Advisory Panel on Ageing and Health, a director with the International Institute on Ageing and president of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.

She was also recently listed in Zoomer magazine as one of “Canada’s Top 45 over 45” for her influence on public policy that affects older Canadians.

Her talk will focus on what seniors can do to keep themselves safe in the event of a major disaster and how they can contribute to the well-being of their community.

The Speaker Series sessions are held at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, room 125 in building 250, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

There are a limited number of single session tickets available at the door.
