With the first phase of work complete, Harewood Centennial Park now boasts a new destination playground.

A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Friday and the improvements include new playground equipment, a mountain bike area, renovated climbing wall, public access to an additional 1.2 hectares of parkland and utility upgrades.

“I think we also need to remember this is just Phase 1 of the improvements and I’m really looking forward to continuing to see this park develop…” said Ian Thorpe, city councillor and parks and recreation commission chairman. “There [are] plans for a dry floor, multipurpose facility and another lacrosse box involved with that, so it’s a very exciting future for the Harewood area.”

The city partnered with a number of groups, including the Nanaimo Lions Club, which donated $15,000 towards improvements, and the Harewood Neighbourhood Association.
