Nanaimo Tim Hortons owners challenge Victoria locations to see who can sell the most smile cookies

Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation is looking forward to seeing just how the cookie crumbles.

Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign is back this week, supporting the hospital foundation.

The campaign, now in its 24th year, started Tuesday and runs until Sunday, Sept. 20, when the $1 purchase price of every fresh-baked, chocolate chunk smile cookie sold in Nanaimo will support the foundation.

Janice Perrino, Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation CEO, said in a press release that Tim Hortons locations in Nanaimo have donated nearly $150,000 over the years for major projects at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. This year’s fundraising will help out the intensive care unit project.

“We are thankful to have the opportunity to work with the smile cookie program and we thank everyone at Tim Hortons for their continued support,” Perrino said.

New this year is a friendly inter-Island competition between Nanaimo and Victoria in which the owners of the eight Nanaimo Tim Hortons restaurants have challenged the owners of the 24 Victoria restaurants to see who can sell the most smile cookies per restaurant during the one-week campaign. Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation and the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island will be the ultimate winners of the challenge.

“Communities coming together during these difficult times is more important than ever,” Dave Milne, Nanaimo Tim Hortons restaurant owner, said in the press release.

Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation has been a conduit for grateful patients and the community to support health care in the central Vancouver Island region for more than 40 years. Funds raised help purchase medical equipment, items for patient comfort and also support large projects that expand and improve health care services.

In 2019 the Smile Cookie campaign raised a record $9.8 million across Canada for 550 charities, hospitals and community programs, according to the release.

Tim Hortons patrons can pre-order Smile Cookies through restaurants in Nanaimo by downloading a pre-order form at www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/smilecookie.
