A jazz concert in Nanaimo will raise funds to support LGBTQ refugees facing persecution.

The Reaching Out Assisting Refugees fundraiser Somewhere Over the Rainbow will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at Brechin United Church.

Island Time Saxophone Quartet and friends will perform two jazz sets with an intermission between where there will be desserts for sale.

ROAR is a volunteer organization with a long-standing partnership with Brechin United Church. Its goal is to bring LGBTQ refugees who are facing serious persecution to safety, according to a news release from the organization.

“For refugees accepted by the Canadian government, the journey to safety is often long and uncertain. It can take from one and a half to three years to finally arrive at the chosen destination. During this waiting period, many live in precarious and unsafe conditions. ROAR Team 8 is working hard to raise funds to support a sponsored refugee currently awaiting travel clearance,” the news release said.

Island Time Saxophone Quartet is a unique wind ensemble of soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones and their music is a mix of genres including modern, medieval, classical and jazz.

Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased on http://eventbrite.com. The show will start at 2 p.m.
