Run for Recovery in Nanaimo raises $12K for Island Crisis Care Society

Edgewood Treatment Centre says it’s grateful to society for services

The Run for Recovery set the pace with $12,400 raised for its cause.

Following its Run for Recovery event in June, Edgewood Treatment Centre recently made the donation to the Island Crisis Care Society.

The eighth annual Run for Recovery took place June 22 at Westwood Lake Park, seeking to raise money and awareness about addiction and recovery. According to a press release, the centre, along with donors, businesses, first responders, alumni, friends and co-workers, were able to make the 2018 run a success.

Edgewood said it is truly grateful to the society for its services. Between 2016 and 2017, the society’s six houses provided beds for more than 16,000 and served close to 30,000 meals, according to the press release. Those statistics “are staggering” and provided the rationale for selecting the society as recipient.

“Island Crisis Care Society is thrilled to be the recipient of the funds raised at the 2018 Run for Recovery,” said Violet Hayes, Island Crisis Care Society executive director, in the press release. “This money will make a huge difference in the lives of many in our community. A huge thank you to Edgewood and all those who volunteered their time. Attending the event for the first time this year, I was impressed with how well it was organized and I had a wonderful time and encourage others to come out next year.”

Dr. Christina Basedow, Edgewood clinical director, said addiction impacts individuals from all walks of life.

“What we hope to accomplish through the annual Run for Recovery is to offer an event that celebrates overcoming obstacles of this chronic illness,” she said. “Recovery is such an incredible thing. Recovery is transformational and is rooted in the foundations of love, gratitude, hope, courage, strength, resilience, and compassion. We strive to be all those things to those that may still need help.”
