Western Edge Theatre takes audience members on a psychological ride during its latest production – Switzerland.

The play is macabre. It’s funny. And at the heart of it there is a character that is unlikable, but vulnerable.

Nanaimo actress Joanne Rowland plays the main character Patricia Highsmith, author of the Ripley novels. It’s the first time Rowland has played a character that was based on a real-life person.

“She did not have a very positive outlook on life. She is not a likable character but I have to make it so the audience can relate to her,” said Rowland. “As a person she didn’t have a beautiful soul, but there is a strength to her that is very remarkable.”

Rowland said part of the joy of playing Highsmith was discovering all the levels to the character. She said there is a vulnerability to Highsmith and a contrast between what the character is feeling and what she says.

The play stars Rowland and Ash Chandler-Pease as Highsmith’s publishing representative.

Highsmith lives in a remote home is Switzerland. She receives a visit from her publishing agent, but begins to question whether he is really who he says he is.

Switzerland debuts Friday (Jan. 20) at Harbour City Theatre, located at 25 Victoria Rd., at 7:30 p.m. It shows Jan. 21 and 27-28 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m. Audience members are advised that the play includes adult language and content.
