VIU theatre students take on comedic look at tavern business

Theatre department presenting ‘A Good Person’ until Nov. 5

A tavern owner is forced to adopt a dual identity due to desperate measures in VIU theatre department’s fall production.

Vancouver Island University students are now staging A Good Person, a comic adaptation by Ross Desprez of The Good Person of Szechwan by Bertolt Brecht.

According to a VIU press release, A Good Person begins with God coming to Earth in search of one good person. He is offered a bed for the night by Chantelle, a poor teenage sex worker, who is then rewarded when a client gives her enough money to buy a tavern. She is soon overwhelmed by creditors, people asking for help and others trying to take advantage of her, so she creates an alter-ego, a business-savvy cousin named Chandler.

“Together they encounter swindlers, lovers, the media and the law as they attempt to succeed in a world that isn’t fair,” the release notes.

Leon Potter, VIU theatre professor, said in the release that A Good Person will have audiences laughing.

The play started this past weekend and continues Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. at VIU’s Malaspina Theatre. There is also a matinee Thursday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at http://eventbrite.ca.
