Twilight shades and morning hues inspire Robert Hasting to paint the sky.
The artist loves painting the natural landscape of Vancouver Island. Trees, logs and the ocean take shape under the guidance of his paint brush.
For years Hasting’s work has remained a private passion. His paintings were piled in his garage secluded from the public eye.
The artist unveils his work during his first exhibit, Island Landscapes, at the Nanaimo Arts Council Gallery during November.
“It feels a bit scary but good too,” said Hastings about publicly showing his work. “I just wanted to have one show. I just wanted someone to see them. Normally they (the paintings) are just stored in the garage.”
Painting was an art form he pursued in high school. However, after graduation he didn’t paint again for more than 30 years. His wife encouraged him to pursue painting again and now at 48 he’s letting others see his work.
His initial paintings were realism but lately his work has taken on a more abstract look.
He also only uses one stroke, not the typical back and forth movements you might see in other paintings.
Hastings said he enjoys painting. He travels around the Island taking photographs, which he uses later in the studio as reference.
“You forget about everything. You throw yourself totally in to the painting. You think about how to do different effects,” said Hastings.
Hastings said 10 per cent of the money he receives for any of his paintings sold he is donating to the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank.
An exhibit reception is being held Nov. 15 from 7-9 p.m. at the Nanaimo Arts Council Gallery, located at Nanaimo North Town Centre. Hastings will be in attendance Nov. 14, 21 and 28 from 1:30-5:30 p.m.
