Mid-Vancouver Island residents can support the Vancouver Island Symphony and spread joy during Symphony of Roses Day (March 22).
The symphony describes the event as a fundraiser like no other, which brings roses to hundreds of unsuspecting residents throughout the region, from Ladysmith to Qualicum Beach, including Gabriola Island.
Volunteers from Turley’s Florists head out in Nanaimo, knock on doors to homes, offices, schools, anywhere a thought of appreciation and caring is being given, and deliver a box of colourful, long-lasting, premium growth roses.
Behind this event are two extraordinary people, Marianne and Jim Turley, who donate their own and their staff's time to make it happen.
“We get compliments every year on the quality of the roses,” said Marianne in a press release. “We can only do this because of the support of our suppliers, the many volunteers, and our staff. It has become a labour of love on our part. And we couldn’t do it without Jim who knows and organizes all the delivery routes.”
She added that volunteers delivering the roses are “amazed at how excited people are to receive a bouquet.”
While reaching out and touching others with roses, Symphony of Roses Day also supports the community.
“The Vancouver Island Symphony is an important part of our community - culturally, socially and economically – while keeping music live,” said Marianne.

A box of 12 roses is $33 and a box of 24 is $62. All orders must be placed through Turley’s Florist, located at 60 Terminal Avenue by Friday (March 17) at 4 p.m. If people prefer to pick them up, they will be ready from 9 a.m. onwards.
