Submissions are open for the City of Nanaimo’s 2018 Poetry in Transit program.

Residents of the Regional District of Nanaimo are welcome to submit up to three poems each to be displayed on RDN Transit buses and promotional materials. This year’s theme is ‘Caring for Others.’

“With everything that’s been happening this summer and this year I thought it would be good to focus on something positive,” Nanaimo poet laureate Tina Biello said.

She added that the program is meant to expose more people to poetry in “unique and creative ways.”

“It’s a great way to get poetry out into the community,” Biello said.

“So many people ride the bus and I know when I ride the bus I always look up. A lot of people are on their phones now but people still do look up at those ads and it’s such a nice suprise to see a poem, and especially a peoem by a local writer is great.”

Poems must be three to five lines long and 50 words or fewer, not including the title. They may be in any style of poetry or an excerpt from a longer poem. Works will not be accepted if they include “certain obscenities or promote hatred or prejudice.”

Those interested in submitting their work may send them to callingallpoets@nanaimo.ca with Poetry in Transit in the subject line. Poets are asked to submit two copies of each poem as separate PDF attachments written in 12-point Times New Roman, one copy containing the author’s name, address e-mail and phone number above the poem, the other copy containing only the poem. The poems must be formatted as the author intends them to appear.

There is no deadline for the program. Selected writers will be contacted.
