The quest to destroy the one ring was an epic journey, but filmmaker Linley Subryan had to tell the first chapter of the journey in just 60 seconds.

The film was created as an entry to the 2013 Fake Film Festival, created by Virgin Radio 95.3 FM, which challenges people to create their own version of a film with actors and still create a story in a short span of time.

Last year Subryan created the Legends of the Fall in 60 seconds, but this year, with the help of Zachary Tannar, he wanted to create Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

“It’s a much bigger scale, more characters, and more special effects,” he said. “I am trying to do something bigger. We are trying to raise the bar over the one I did last year.”

The production took about 20 people, which includes local Nanaimo actors, makeup artists and special effects technicians.

“It’s my baby and I am playing Gandalf and Aragorn,” said Subryan. “It’s all Nanaimo people and people have really chipped in and pooled their meager resources together to make this.”

The grand prize is $10,000 and there is also a People’s Choice award that is determined by the number of likes a film receives.  Subryan said he’s hoping people like his film, which will also be tabulated in the final grand prize score.
