Public art on display in Nanaimo

Residents and visitors to Nanaimo are invited to explore the city’s parks for new installations of public art

Residents and visitors to Nanaimo are invited to explore the city’s parks for new installations of public art.

City crews will install seven new temporary public art pieces at Maffeo Sutton Park; McGregor Park; and Beban Park social centre today (May 8), which will remain on display until this time next year.

At that time, the pieces will go up for auction through the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s website, with proceeds supporting the gallery and the temporary art project fund to ensure the program’s sustainability.

Twenty-six applications from artists were received after the city’s request for proposals was issued in fall 2011. A seven-member panel selected the pieces to go on display this year.

Plaques recognizing the artists, describing the pieces and giving auction details will be on display with each piece.
