A pair of potters return to showcase their latest projects at Art 10 Gallery.

Ruth Porter and Virginia Dunseith bring their combined Celebration of Clay exhibit to Nanaimo North Town Centre until the end of the year.

Dunseith specializes in whimsical creations such as frogs and masks, while Porter said she likes to focus on garden and plate works.

“I get tired of doing round things,” Dunseith said. “And I like lots of colour.”

Although they use various firing methods, Porter said she has leaned more toward wood firing recently, which can take days to get ready and which causes ash to fly around and onto different pieces and creates an earthy tone to the glaze.

Many of their pieces have also been smoke-fired, electric-fired and raku-fired.

The pair said they also prefer to use homemade glazes over commercial glazes to achieve unique colours.

Porter and Dunseith, who have known each other since 1976, both said they’re at a point in their lives where they now like to create for “play” instead of focusing on what might sell best.

“We don’t do it for the money,” Dunseith said, and added that larger sales in the past created undue stress for them when trying to figure out themes that might be seasonally popular.

“So now we make what we want to make,” Porter said.

The Celebration of Clay exhibit, featuring an array of garden, home and playful creations, can be viewed at the Art 10 Gallery during mall hours until Dec. 31.
