Orchestra embraces its muse

NANAIMO - The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra ends its season with A Youthful Muse concert Saturday (June 8).

The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra is ending its season with musical musing from classical composers such as Bach and Vivaldi.

The group’s concert A Youthful Muse is Saturday (June 8).

The orchestra will perform Bach’s Eight Organ Preludes to Fugues and Ottorino Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite Three, and Dag Wiren’s Serenade for String Orchestra.

The concert features this year’s winners of the orchestra’s Concerto Competition for Young Musicians – harpists Hayley Farenholtz and Kaleigh Stroink. The winners of the competition received a $500 prize.

The two musicians are students of Marilyn Rummel at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music and will perform Vivaldi’s Concerto in G Major.

A Youthful Muse starts at 7:30 p.m. at Brechin United Church. Tickets are $20 adults/$10 students, and children under 12 years old are free.Tickets are available by calling 250-754-8550, at the Port Theatre box office, at 125 Front St., or www.porttheatre.com.

The chamber orchestra has a core group of about 25 musicians and invites special guests for many of its performances. The orchestra is a mix of professionals and pre-professional music students.
