OK, Dope, a Victoria-based production company, will bring two up-and-coming comedians to a Nanaimo brewery this Wednesday.

Dan Duvall, of the Hate Locker Podcast, will headline at the Wolf Brewing Co. on Old Victoria Road on Oct. 5, with Nash Park of the OK, Dope Podcast.

“I pull from my own experience, so there’s a lot of stuff about being a Victoria city boy and having a dad from Saskatchewan,” said Duvall. “You know, having a real tough ‘man’s man’ as a dad, when I am not that … There’s a lot about sobriety – I’m a recovering drug addict. I’m almost five years clean and sober … And just a lot of stories from the road and touring and what it’s like doing comedy in other cities.”

He expects Wednesday’s show to be a laid-back, casual set where everyone “has an experience” together.

Although Duvall, who is the resident host at Hecklers Bar and Grill in Victoria, has performed at several Nanaimo venues in the past, including the Queen’s Hotel and the Nanaimo Bar, he said going to a brewery was the right move for his conversational style of comedy.

“The Venn diagram of people who like craft beer and people who like stand-up comedy is almost a circle,” he said, adding that most brewery owners are fans of comedy and most people who show up make an excellent audience.

He also said a lot of stand-up comedians are now leaning toward brewery venues, especially since they tend to be an “easy plug-in” of a single microphone to a sound system.

Duvall’s journey into the comedy world can be seen on the media streaming platform Crave as part of the documentary Funny Tweets which depicts how posting ‘funny tweets’ as a Victoria pharmacy tech launched him into freelance work with Andy Richter and the writers of Family Guy and The Simpsons. His written work has also appeared in Cartoon Network and Adult Swim productions.

OK, Dope’s Nanaimo show is the start of a three-day tour that takes Duvall and Park through Port Alberni on Oct. 6 and Salt Spring Island on Oct. 7. Tickets for the tour can be purchased online at www.ok-dope.com.

Following the tour, Duvall is also producing a stand up show for Mike Delamont at the Mary Winspear Centre in Victoria on Oct. 12.
