A tribute by an American playwright to the great English farces of the 1930s and ’40s will be staged as the Nanaimo Theatre Group’s latest production.
In Ken Ludwig’s A Fox on the Fairway, the Quail Valley Country Club faces off against its arch rival, Crouching Squirrel Golf and Racquet Club, for the annual golf tournament – a tournament that Quail Valley has lost for five years. With a sizeable wager at stake, the competition takes place amidst love affairs, a disappearing diamond, objectionable sweaters and an exploding vase.
“Audiences are taken on a hilarious romp which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club,” noted a press release. “Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it’s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics.”
Wes Lazaroff portrays Henry Bingham, Quail Valley’s manager; Tracy Ottenbreit plays Dickie Bell, Crouching Squirrel’s president; Erin Mudry portrays Pamela Peabody, Dickie’s ex-wife; and Jennifer Ottenbreit plays Muriel Bingham, Henry’s wife. The cast is rounded out by Tasha Ballantyne who plays Louise, a waitress who loves Quail Valley’s newest hire, Justin, played by Cole Landry.
Ian Matthews and Peggy Harris co-direct their third play, having previously worked on Don’t Dress for Dinner and Key for Two together.
A Fox on the Fairway shows at the Bailey Studio on Rosstown Road from Feb. 19 until March 10 with matinee and evening performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nanaimotheatregroup.ca.
