Poetry is getting a special place in the city with Nanaimo creating a poet laureate position.
The laureate is intended to serve as the people’s poet to help make a positive impact on the literary culture on Nanaimo and share the importance poetry has on community life. The individual will serve as a literary ambassador for the city.
Community members are invited to nominate a poet. The poet must have published at least one book of poetry and other literary work, have received peer or public recognition and must live in the Regional District of Nanaimo.
The poet laureate will serve a three-year term beginning this September and will receive $1,000 annually. A committee will choose the poet.
The nomination deadline is June 30 and the selection will be made in July.
