During the 1980s, a group of tourists on the island of Ko Pha Ngan in Thailand were admiring a full moon when they decided to throw a dance party to celebrate the moon’s beauty.

In the months and years following, tourists began throwing monthly full moon parties on the tiny island.

Since then, Ko Pha Ngan has become famous for its full moon parties, which now attract thousands of tourists from around the world. The parties were portrayed in the 2000 film The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton.

Tonight (March 5), Koncept Nightclub will be throwing its own Thailand-style full moon party to celebrate the full moon.

According to club manager Sydney Braid, people can expect a night of glow sticks and music by Vancouver Island University student and DJ David Whiteman.

“For those who have been to Thailand and experienced the epic full moon parties, they may know what to expect,” Braid said. “For those who haven’t had the opportunity, they can look forward to a night full of glow paint, neon, dancing, unreal beats, and buckets on special.”

This month’s full moon is sometimes referred to as a worm moon. According to EarthSky.org, the moon will be over 45,000 kilometres away from the earth, making it the smallest full moon of the year.

Koncept Nightclub’s doors open at 10 p.m. tonight and there is no cover charge. For more information, please visit www.bitly.com/KonceptNClubFB or follow the venue on Twitter at @KonceptNClub.
